Mountains of Hiking Happiness

... the best way to describe the opportunities awaiting you in LESSACH.

Tucked away in the lovely mountain landscape of the Niedere Tauern, this little mountain farming town (elevation 1,208 m) is particularly charming to those who love to experience the outdoors in pristine form.

The motto "Lessach – the village full of good wishes" captures another charming feature of this little town: whether you’re hiking, gathering mushrooms, stopping for a bite to eat in a rustic hut or a tavern, the well-wishing hospitality of Lessach’s locals will accompany you along your way and catch you by surprise time and again.

Gorgeous lookouts and numerous crystal-clear mountain lakes are just waiting to be explored and marveled at. Whether in the summer or under the clear skies of autumn!

Both the Salzburg ARNO trail and the Lungau cultural trail wind through the village of Lessach. Along the way, you’ll find informational plaques about the general history, architectural history (wooden granaries, chapels, tithe barn, Thurnschall Castle ruins), mining history, and legends of the Lessach Valley.

Situated around St. Paul’s Parish Church is the Lessach cemetery. The uniform edging to the cemetery’s graves, cast and wrought-iron crosses, and ossuary make it a uniquely Austrian piece of culture as well as an extraordinarily significant site from an art-historical standpoint .

Tradition and Cuisine

Lessach is not only colorful in terms of its natural surroundings. Year-round, particularly on the Sunday before Corpus Christi and during the Feasts of Saints Peter and Paul on the last Sunday in June, you’ll encounter multicolored traditional attire: the red, white, and yellow uniforms of the ceremonial militia and marching band as well as traditional rural garb and festive “Dirndl” dresses.

Have you ever heard of “Wasserscheibenschiessen” (water-target shooting) or the Preber witches?

In a protected high-moor area at the foot of the 2,741 m high Preber mountain is Preber Lake, on which a unique shooting tournament takes place once a year during the last weekend of August: the goal is to shoot at the reflection of a target on the lake’s surface in such a way that the shot deflects off and hits the actual target on the lakeshore. But whether or not the shooters hit their targets may all just depend on the whims of the Preber witches! After all, they are the ones who decide who gets lucky!

Every September and October, a famous event called "Schafaufbrateln" takes place, an event that does honor to Lungau mutton. The sheep have spent the entire summer grazing on the lush vegetation of the high Alpine pastures. Potatoes, horseradish sauce, and cranberries are usually served with this regional specialty. Don’t forget a sip of homemade schnapps to round out this perfect meal !

Winter Vacation in Lessach
Enjoy a mellow winter holiday in Lessach on a horse-drawn sleigh ride, a secluded winter stroll, or the romantic cross-country ski trails that wind through the wilderness protection area. You can also hike up the natural toboggan run to the Wildbach hut and rent a sled. From there, you’ll have a blast gliding down 3.5 kilometers of snow.

Lessach is also a perfect starting point for some of the most beautiful backcountry skiing in the Lungau region: try Gumma Mountain (elev. 1,100) or renowned Preber Mountain (elev. 1,500). Innumerable backcountry ski opportunities throughout the area or even a moonlight tour will leave you with long-lasting memories.

Where can I find something like this?
The Lessach Ski Club operates a 550-m long tow lift. The best part: you can rent it out privately for family and friends.

For those with more demanding taste, the Lungau mountain lifts’ state-of-the-art facilities are just 20 km away. Idyllic ski areas with 150 of perfectly groomed, family-friendly runs, challenging carving runs, or superb deep-powder slopes.

A relaxed atmosphere without long lift lines .
