Muhr
Gateway to Hohe Tauern National Park
EA relaxing, friendly, and particularly family-oriented resort town in one of the most beautiful side valleys of SalzburgerLand’s Lungau region. Muhr is situated in a landscape of flourishing Alpine meadows surrounded by majestic mountains and is guarded by the mighty Hafner (3,076 m), the highest mountain in the Lungau. Here, your vacation becomes a journey of natural discovery.
The beauty and diversity of this mountain landscape explains its ongoing designation as part of the Hohe Tauern National Park, the largest national park in Central Europe. Austria’s second-largest river, the “MUR” originates in the rearmost corner of the Mur Valley, at an elevation of 1,989 in the middle of Hohe Tauern National Park. 140 km of hiking trails are just waiting to be discovered: here in town, deep within the Mur Valley, leading up to the Alpine huts, five mountain lakes, various waterfalls, natural landmarks, ridges, and peaks. In order to protect the beautiful, pristine landscape, public motor vehicle use is prohibited in the Mur and Muritzen valleys. However, the valley bus is available to help you get around .
Prangstangen
One special local event is the annual tradition of “Prangstangentragen” (carrying tall flower-covered log poles) on 29. June for the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul (with a “Samson” parade in the afternoon). The poles, up to 80 kg heavy and 6 m high, are decorated with flowers and floral wreaths and could hardly be more beautiful or more original. The poles remain in the church and can be viewed there until 15. August.
Tour de Mur
Muhr is the starting point for the beloved bike tour “TOUR de MUR,” which extends over 300 km to the town of Bad Radkersburg. Every year, Austria’s most beautiful and fun three-day multistage tour to Bad Radkersburg begins in Muhr. Muhr’s awards for being a “model bike-friendly community” underline its commitment to bike tourism.
Insider Tips for the Winter
Muhr is an exciting destination “off the beaten path” during the winter. It is the starting point for the Mur Valley cross-country ski trail, whilst also offering ice skating and ice stock (a sport similar to curling), also at night by floodlight. Backcountry skiers and ice climbers are particularly active in the upper Mur Valley. Should they happen to crave a day of traditional Alpine skiing, then they’re in luck as well – the largest ski areas in the Lungau region are only about 15 km away from Muhr and can be conveniently reached with the ski bus.
