Ramingstein

Progress and Life-Long Dreams

Every year, thousands of visitors take part in the numerous cultural events offered as part of the Ramingstein Summer Cultural Festival.

Situated at an elevation of 970 m in the tri-border region where the provinces of Salzburg, Styria, and Carinthia meet, Ramingstein is the fourth-largest community in the Lungau region. The town is nestled in the Lungau Nockberge mountains and is made up of four localities: Kendlbruck, Madling, Karneralm, and Ramingstein. Ramingstein’s existence was first referenced in documents dating back to 1139. Its main landmark, Finstergrün Castle, towers above the town and is known as one of Austria’s “living” castles, especially as it also functions as a youth hostel .

Medieval Ore Routes
From the 15th to the end of the 18th century, the mining industry flourished in Ramingstein. The rear end of the Mühlbach Valley in Kendlbruck was an important site for iron-mining operations, and Ramingstein was home to both lead and silver mines. During the medieval era, Ramingstein was one of the largest mining areas in the Alpine region. In 1841, a forest fire ravaged the town and was so devastating that it did not recover until the beginning of the 20th century.

Today, the silver mine functions as a tourist mine that gives visitors insight into its long mining history. The Silver Market, a small but impressive event that evolved during the region’s early mining days, takes place annually and displays the region’s mining tradition through products and themes like jewelry, minerals, and arts and crafts, etc. It offers an exciting market day for visitors with almost any interest.

The "old" ore routes have now been made passable once again and also include a historical crushing mill and an adventure play area—all in all, a fun excursion for the whole family.

Ramingstein, which has taken it upon itself to realize the lifelong dreams of its locals and its visitors, is a truly progressive community that also places great value on its unique tradition. With its “Village of Artists,” it has emerged over the past few years as an art and culture center that is recognized far beyond the region’s borders. Its established program of theater productions, exhibits, symposia, and workshops offers an attractive array of cultural activities that has already won the town several awards .

Karneralm-Schönfeld-Innerkrems
Experience a bit of peace and quiet at the Karneralm-Schönfeld-Innerkrems ski area, pleasantly removed from the major centers of skiing activity. You’ll be impressed by the unique way nature and sports come together here. The area’s “rounded mountains” allow you the chance to embark on safe, yet exciting, backcountry skiing and snowshoeing adventures, and they are also ideal for beginning skiers.

The abundant natural snow here will satisfy your craving for leisure, enjoyment, and relaxation in an environment where preserving the pristine quality of the land is also a priority. Additionally, the Karneralm is a fantastic hiking paradise in the summer and is suitable for the entire family .
