St. Margarethen

St. Margarethen

A Place of Tranquil Energy

St. Margarethen im Lungau is centrally located, yet tucked away from the noisy hustle and bustle of the streets. In the summer, you can enjoy the area’s sun, clear waters, and mountains; in the winter, we’ve got snow, ski slopes, cross-country trails, and a whole lot of family fun.

In the summertime in and around St. Margarethen, you can look forward to blossoming meadows, hikes along well-marked trails with a refreshing, gentle breeze nudging you along the way, and the sound of rushing mountain streams in the background. Along the trails, you’ll find numerous benches to rest and relax. Experience the flora and fauna of the Alpine pastures, witness dairymaids churning butter, and stay fit by embarking on a Nordic walking adventure along the Leisnitzgraben Waterway or through shaded forests. Well-designed routes for mountain bikers and cyclists present just one more leisure opportunity you can enjoy. You’ll find a combination of unique cultural and culinary highlights in and around St. Margarethen. Moosham Castle, Roman stones, and St. Augustine Chapel bear witness to earlier times. Both the newly conceived “Trail of the Senses” and our cultural hiking trail offer a glimpse of the local happenings.

Riding, in-line skating, 18-hole golfing, and tennis on two outdoor courts are additional sports opportunities in St. Margarethen. Kids will love the petting zoo, wildlife feeding opportunities, the playgrounds, and the children’s activity programs offered.

Aineck Ski Area in St. Margarethen
St. Margarethen, with its Katschberg - Aineck ski area is a popular ski resort in the winter. You’ll find flat, easy access roads to the ski area with plenty of parking at the base of the Aineck mountain lifts. A total of 16 modern chair and tow lifts link the interconnected ski areas of Katschberg and Aineck, and a ski bus will bring you safely to your desired destination. We offer over 66 km of perfectly groomed runs; snowboarders will find a half pipe, pro jump, and slides, as well as a fun park. Our children’s ski school, Firnsepp, is run by trained staff members and gladly accomodates beginning young skiers, ranging in age from the wee little ones to older kids.

An insider’s tip for backcountry skiers: Aineck has a lot to offer! We recommend a moonlight tour up to the Adlerhorst. Winter hikers will be happy to know that our winter hiking trails are well-groomed, and cross-country skiers have several options to choose from on our valley and high trails. Finally, those who like to kick back and relax but join in some action here and there can play a leisurely game of ice stock sport or take a horse-and-buggy ride .
