Tamsweg, the main community within the Lungau region, is located in the southernmost corner of SalzburgerLand, at an elevation of 1,024 m. The community has around 6,000 inhabitants and offers its visitors a fantastic range of recreational activities in a largely pristine natural setting. In the Preber sports and recreation area, the Moorland Trail will bring you to the 1,514 m high Preber Lake loop, where you’ll find a lovely trail that circles around the lake. The gorgeous mountain backdrop—in particular, 2,740 m high Preber mountain—will inspire you to explore the great hiking opportunities the area has to offer.

The Lungau Folk Heritage Museum in Tamsweg displays an array of interesting cultural artifacts and is home of the famous giant Samson figure. We also invite you to sit down for a chat with the locals and experience a truly unique sense of hospitality.

Cycling and biking fans will love the altitude here and will find Tamsweg an excellent starting point for the diverse network of biking routes. For trekking bikers, the 340 km long Murrad Trail guarantees an incredible tour. Tamsweg is an ideal starting point for the area’s numerous well-marked hiking paths as well. The picturesque area around Tamsweg offers you a fantastic range of winter sports opportunities. Tobogganing and the natural toboggan run on Preber mountain provide great fun for the whole family. Cross-country fans have the opportunity to ski around Preber Lake on a system of beautiful high trails that traverse snowy Alpine meadows.
