Thomatal is situated at the bottom of the valley and is surrounded by fields, pastures, and forests. In the middle of town is St. George’s parish church, where the influential Father Valentin Pfeifenberger, the “Bishop of Lungau,” was active until his death in 2004.

The village and its 350 or so inhabitants are, naturally, very agriculture-centered. However, the townspeople are equally concerned with the preservation of the many cultural monuments and landmarks in the area – for instance, the historic Bundschuh Smelter as well as the ruins of Edenfest Castle, excavated in 1999.

In the winter, you’ll have a chance to participate in a variety of recreational activities, including ice stock, tobogganing, hiking, and cross-country skiing. Also located within the town limits but higher up, at an elevation of 1,750 m, is the Schönfeld summer and winter recreation area. 25 km of cross-country trails will get winter sport lovers’ hearts pumping. Another highlight is the so-called “Kasmandl Trail”, which includes a children’s cross-country trail, toboggan run, and playground. This area is particularly family-friendly – a place where parents and kids can relax and have a blast together.

St. George’s parish church has recently been renovated and displays, among other things, an organ and a clock that are among the oldest in the country.

Thomatal residents also love to show their guests the newly constructed works of art made from metal, stone, and wood that have been incorporated harmoniously into their hikable surroundings, from the village square (elev. 1,050 m) all the way up to Schönfeld (1,730 m). Romantic lakes, Alpine hill farms, the remnants of old mining tunnels, and abundant food and drink in hospitable local eateries – all of this awaits visitors both young and old on their hiking adventures amid the gentle hillsides of the Nockberge mountains. Vacation time can often awaken a new sense of creativity. We therefore also offer visitors a chance to be creative, either by learning and exploring new skills or constructing arts and crafts with natural materials.

The area is quiet and peaceful, yet by no means isolated. Thomatal is the southernmost community in the province and is located in the easily accessible Three-Corners region, where the provincial borders of Carinthia, Styria, and Salzburg converge .
