Advent in Lungau is a very reflective, quiet time of year. Christmas traditions and regional delicacies enchant visitors young and old, and remind us that the most important celebration of the year is always anticipated with excitement and warmth in our hearts.
Advent and Christmas Markets
The beguiling scents of twigs, resin, cinnamon, clove, fruit cake, gingerbread, vanilla cookies, roasted chestnuts, sausage, bacon, and fresh-baked bread come from stands made of fragrant pine wood. Christmas tree decorations and homemade crafts, knitted and felted items, as well as nativity scenes, all awake our memories of Christmas.
The Christmas carol "Silent Night! Holy Night!"
From 1815 to 1817, Joseph Mohr worked as assistant priest in Mariapfarr and at this time wrote the text of his world famous Christmas carol "Silent Night, Holy Night". Within the historical premises of the old parsonage, the parochial and pilgrimage museum of Mariapfarr is home to valuable exhibits, documentation about Joseph Mohr, as well as a nativity scene with figures from the 18th century.

Nicholas & Krampus
On the evening of December 6, St. Nicholas goes from house to house with his helpers to reward good children and adults for their good deeds and to remind them of their bad ones. Companions of St. Nicholas are the so-called “Guatselträger” or “candy bearers”, as well as the Krampuses.
The Krampuses with their carved, wooden masks show an evil, frightening face with sharp teeth, a gnarled nose, and long horns. Wrapped in a shaggy coat with heavy bells and smaller bells on his back, a powerful staff in one hand and a chain in the other, the Krampus resembles a fearsome monster. And while St. Nicholas rewards children that have been good throughout the year with presents, the sinister Krampus rattles his chains .
