Whether hiking to clear alpine tarns or up to the high peaks, whether mountain biking or enjoying well-earned refreshments at a traditional hut, you are always certain to be enthusiastic about your stay in Lessach in UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Salzburger Lungau.
You are also bound to enjoy a secluded winter hike in the clear mountain air, or gliding along the romantic cross-country ski trail that runs through the nature sanctuary. This small hill-farming village at 1208 meters above sea level represents much of the core zone of the Biosphere Reserve, putting it under special nature-conservancy protections. It is simultaneously home to numerous farms that consciously go about their daily work here as high as 1440 meters above sea level.
"The journey is its own reward" - Confucius
that the cemetery in Lessach is unique worldwide and considered quite an art-historical treasure. True to the tenet that all men are equal before God, since the 17th century all graves here have been so-called "coffer graves", designed simply and uniformly.
An interesting place of peace and quiet, well worth a visit at any time of year, not just All Saints. For countless generations now, in this cemetery surrounding the pretty parish church in Lessach, all grave mounds have been encased by boards of larchwood painted silver and black, and including an appropriate adage.
