Pilgrims in the SalzburgerLand - Leonhardsweg Tamsweg inLungau
St. Leonhard's Church in Tamsweg, in the south of SalzburgerLand, used to be one of the most significant pilgrimage destinations in Austria back in the Middle Ages.
St. Leonhard's Way leads pilgrims along 130 kilometers of clearly marked paths through glorious countryside, alternating from flat stretches to climbs of as much as 900 vertical meters, extending from Salzburg Cathedral to St. Leonhard's Church in Tamsweg.
A pilgrimage on the St. Leonhard's Way - to untouched countryside, beautiful valleys, impressive mountain crossings and many sights along the way - quickly has you forgetting the grey daily routine. Should you wish to continue on, you can also branch off onto the Hemma Pilgrims' Way - which runs from Metnitz in Carinthia to Tamsweg - with Admont abbey also an intriguing starting point.
Tamsweg, the destination and the main county seat of the Lungau region, rewards pilgrims with its warmth, picturesque buildings, mid-size businesses, as well as outstanding regional dining.
Incidentally: St. Leonhard's Way can also be explored by bicycle (with a few detours away from the footpath), or you can just as readily complete your pilgrimage with the aid of a bus or car.
The St. Leonhard's pilgrimage brochure is available free of charge from the Tamsweg Tourist Office T +43 (0)6474 2145
