Let's go to the top

What could be better than getting up at the crack of dawn, packing your snack into your backpack and setting off on a beautiful mountain tour?

Salzburg's Lungau region is considered a true hiker's paradise with romantic alpine pastures, magnificent peaks and numerous mountain lakes.

"Whether enjoyable family hikes or multi-day stages with summit experiences - there's a tour here for everyone!"

Difficulties of the hiking trails in the alpine area

  • easy (blue): easy hiking trails in the permanent settlement area and subsequent forest area, leading through flat terrain, no major climbs.
Requirements: No special requirements, walkable with running or street shoes. No special equipment is needed to get around. The trail can be walked even without a trail map.
  • medium (red): Mountain trails where some surefootedness is already necessary. Steep steps, water runners, narrows, grass bricks and earthy tubs due to washouts are encountered on these trails.
Requirements: A minimum level of orientation is required. Over-the-ankle hiking/trekking/mountain boots with good tread soles are recommended, as is a trail map (topographic map) of the area.
  • Difficult (black): difficult mountain trails and alpine climbs that are secured in exposed places with ropes, artificial stairs, ladders, chains, etc.. Here the hands are used for locomotion and to support the balance. The path layout is not always clearly recognizable as such. In some places there are exposed areas with danger of falling, scree terrain, sloping grass, rock and rugged terrain. Residual old snow must be expected in some circumstances.
Requirements: Appropriate mountain experience is necessary here. You should also be familiar with the use of an accurate hiking map (topographical map). Hiking/trekking/mountain boots with a good tread sole that reach above the ankles are absolutely necessary. Rope safety devices, artificial footholds and the like should not cause any difficulties even on the descent. Hiking poles are sometimes a hindrance here.
