Lungau Tauern rye - the heritage of the Alps

In Salzburg Lungau region, at over 1,000 meters above sea level, one of Austria's oldest and most valuable grain varieties thrives: Lungau Tauern rye. This robust winter cereal was cultivated in the region 300 years ago and has adapted perfectly to the special climatic conditions of the Alps.

Today, Tauern rye is much more than just an agricultural product - it is a piece of living culture. Thanks to the commitment of four Lungau farming families, this almost forgotten rye variety was revived over 15 years ago and has since established itself as a symbol of the Slow Food movement in Lungau.
