Lungau Tauern Rye – the Heritage of the Alps

In the Salzburg Lungau region, at more than 1,000 meters above sea level, one of Austria's oldest and most valuable grain varieties thrives: the Lungau Tauern rye. This robust winter cereal was cultivated in the region already 300 years ago and has adapted perfectly to the special climatic conditions of the Alps.

Today, Tauern rye is much more than just an agricultural product - it is a piece of living culture. Thanks to the commitment of four Lungau farming families, this almost forgotten rye variety was revived more than 15 years ago and has established itself ever since as a symbol of the Slow Food movement in the Lungau region.

The Special Thing about Tauern Rye

Whether as bread, pasta, or pastries – Tauern rye impresses with its strong taste and valuable ingredients. Especially in the weeks of Advent before Christmas, it is the main ingredient for the Lungau Tauern rye honey gingerbread, which delights with its fine flavor and incomparable aroma.

Lungau Tauern rye is not only a delight, but also a statement for sustainability and regionality – a truly unique product that makes the Salzburg Lungau region so special.
