The Harvest Festival in the Salzburg Lungau Region

In the Salzburg Lungau region, the harvest festival combines deeply rooted customs, community, and an appreciation of nature. With magnificent harvest crowns, festive processions, and convivial gatherings, we celebrate the harvest season in an unforgettable way.

The harvest festival procession leads the village community and their guests through the village and the surrounding fields. The harvest crown is often presented on a carriage pulled by horses. The procession is an expression of gratitude for a good growing season without severe storms as well as a rich harvest.

The Significance of the Harvest Crown

The harvest crown is the central symbol of the harvest festival. It is created with great dedication by the rural youth movement, the ladies of the traditional costumes association, and countrywomen. The wreath basically consists of different types of grains such as rye, barley, and oats and is decorated with colorful ribbons and flowers.

A cross made of twigs of the box tree adorns the top of the crown and is a symbol for eternal life. Regional products such as bread, fruit, and vegetables are arranged under the crown, representing the diversity of the harvest.
