To ensure that your hiking experience in the Salzburg Lungau region remains safe and unforgettable, there are a few important rules and codes of conduct to respect regarding the mountains and alpine pastures.

There are countless farmed alpine pastures and meadows in the Salzburg Lungau region. They are wonderful natural landscapes, appreciated vacation destinations, and – not least – important economic areas. This irreplaceable cultural landscape can only be maintained and kept freely accessible in the future if animals continue to be herded and the alpine pastures to be farmed area-wide, which is why we rely on good cooperation on Austria's alpine pastures and meadows.

By following these rules you behave correctly:

11 Important Hiking Rules
  • Before every tour, check the mountain experience and physical fitness of all participants, including children. Mountain hiking often requires surefootedness and a head for heights.
  • Precise planning based on tour descriptions and maps. Information from alpine clubs and local experts, such as hut keepers, can be a decisive help.
  • Make sure you have the right equipment and clothing. Sturdy high boots with a good grip sole as well as rain and cold protection are particularly important.
  • Before setting off, let the hut keeper, hotelier or your friends know the route and destination of the tour as well as the expected time of return.
  • Adapt the pace to the weakest members of the group. Make sure you walk slowly, especially at the start of the hike. Be sure to observe other participants so that exhaustion can be recognized in good time .
  • Do not leave marked paths. Take great care when walking on steep grassy slopes, especially when wet (risk of slipping). The crossing of steep snowfields or glaciers is particularly dangerous.
  • Do not loosen stones (risk of injury to other hikers). Places at risk of falling rocks should be passed individually, quickly and without stopping.
  • If the weather changes, fog falls, the path becomes too difficult or is in poor condition, turn back. This is not a disgrace, but a sign of common sense.
  • If an accident occurs, keep calm. If you are unable to provide help, try to get help by using your cell phone, shouting, signaling with lights, or waving large items of clothing. An injured person is usually to be left at the place of accident, but must never be left alone.
  • Preserve flora and fauna. Take waste with you down into the valley.
  • Pay attention to correct behavior when encountering grazing animals!
Together on Austria's Mountain Pastures
  • Avoid direct contact with grazing livestock.
  • Do not feed the animals, keep a safe distance!
  • Be calm, do not frighten grazing cattle!
  • Mother cows protect their calves. Avoid encounters between suckler cows and dogs at all costs!
  • Always keep dogs under control and always keep them on a short leash. If an attack by a grazing animal is foreseeable: Unleash immediately!
  • Respect areas prohibited for dogs and/or the obligation of leashing them!
  • Do not leave hiking trails on alpine pastures and meadows!
  • If grazing cattle are blocking the path, walk around with the greatest distance possible!
  • When grazing cattle approach: stay calm, do not turn your back, avoid the animals!
  • Leave the grazing area quickly at the first sign of restless animals!
  • Gates and fences must be closed again after having crossed them!
  • Treat the people working here, nature as well as all animals with respect!
  • Forestal restricted areas must be observed!
