In the southern part of Salzburger Land, the village of Mariapfarr lies at 1100 meters above sea level – surrounded by picturesque mountains – where you will find the absolute best conditions for your vacation in Austria.
In summer, it is the numerous hiking trails, themed pathways and mountain bike tours that invite you to explore the mountains on foot or by bicycle. In winter, Mariapfarr is the hub of the Lungo ski region. Like the points of a star, the ski resorts of the Fanningberg, Grosseck-Speiereck, Katschberg, Aineck and Obertauern radiate out from the village itself.
"In the mountains is freedom" - Wanda Rutkiewicz
Mariapfarr is the sunniest place in Austria.
This year, we have already recorded:
☼ 1515 hours of sunshine
that Joseph Mohr served as an assistant priest in Mariapfarr from 1815 to 1817? It was during this time – in 1816 - that Joseph Mohr wrote the words for what would become the world's most beloved Christmas song, "Silent Night". This is why the Parish, Pilgrimage and Silent Night Museum in Mariapfarr also provides fascinating documentation about the life of Joseph Mohr as well as his song.
By the way, did you also know that the mother church in Mariapfarr was first chronicled back in the year 923? Over the centuries, the church was constantly remodeled and expanded in various architectural styles. On 5 April 2018, Pope Francis raised this pilgrimage church by decree to the status of a Basilica minor.
