The Advent season in Salzburg Lungau region is a particularly sensual and peaceful time. When the first snow covers the landscape in a soft, white blanket and the days get shorter and shorter, the anticipation of Christmas sets in.
Christmas customs and regional delicacies enchant visitors of all ages. Here between the Radstädter Tauern and the Carinthian Nockberge mountains, traditional customs are still practiced today as they were generations ago.
Specially constructed floats, loud music and fire accompany the many different Krampus groups on their run through the streets of the Lungau villages.

From 1815 to 1817, Joseph Mohr worked as a coadjutor in the Lungau community of Mariapfarr and wrote the lyrics to his world-famous Christmas carol "Silent Night, Holy Night" during this time.
The historic premises of the old vicarage are home to the Mariapfarr Parish and Pilgrimage and Silent Night Museum with precious exhibits, a documentary about Joseph Mohr and a nativity scene with figures from the 18th century.
