Hiking in & around St. Margarethen

Salzburger Lungau

We have many gentle walking and mountain trails which enable the tourist to explore the wonderful nature of our region and become acquainted with its history and culture.

The Leisnitz river (also known as the  water path  Leisnitzflows down through a beautiful valley and is very popular with families. As you walk up the valley you will see 9 stations with mosaic designs, telling the story of the lonely giant. The valley eventually leads to the Schlögelberger restaurant which serve tasty, locally produced food and drinks. You can also enjoy seeing their collection of deer, goats and alpacas.
The  Römersteig is a beautiful route, running through wooded terrain between St Margarethen and Pichlern. This follows the route of a 2000 year old Roman road which ran from north to south through our region.
There are many hiking trails of varying lengths, where you can see the village of St.Margarethen from many different views. These trails are all marked on our hiking map St. Margarethen or on the Interactive Card Lungau or on Bergfex.

Cycling & BIKing alsong creeks & rivers

The Leisnitz mountain bike route no.15 starts directly from St Margarethen and runs up through a beautiful valley which is a fun challenge to experienced mountain bikers and trained athletes alike.

If a rather less energetic bike ride is more to your taste, then what could be better than to ride the level Murradweg running alongside the river Mur ? You can enjoy the beautiful scenery as you travel along the valley floor from St Michael all the way to Tamsweg.
