In July 2012, Salzburger Lungau, together with the Carinthian Nockberge, was proclaimed UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Salzburger Lungau, making it the biggest UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in all of Austria.

This immensely significant distinction reflects the extraordinary quality of the nature and way of life within the region, as well as a commitment to preserving and nurturing our own culture.

What is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve?

UNESCO Biosphere Reserves are large conservation areas that represent natural and cultural landscapes of worldwide significance.
They are places where people live and work, where the economy evolves; places where the underlying values and culture are natural and invaluable. The goal of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is to preserve biological diversity and cultural values, while driving regional development in exemplary fashion, hand-in-hand with the local population.
