In Lungau holiday paradise, you never get bored
There's a saying that essentially goes, there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing. We couldn't agree more. And it is sometimes astonishing just how quickly the weather can change. In the morning high fog and rain, but in the afternoon the sun shines brilliantly down from the sky once more.
For hiking that's actually quite pleasant - not too hot, with short rain showers spent resting up at a mountain hut along the way where, for the most part, rainy days are actually more high-spirited than usual. You edge closer together, sit down longer, drink a shot or two of gentian, pine or fruit schnapps ... it is often those days that leave you with the most lasting memories …

Burg Mauterndorf : yearning for the Middle Ages

This magical castle is an emblem that stands imposingly above the village of Ramingstein. With a history that extends all the way back to the 12th century, enjoy magnificent views from the three castle keeps, while the castle is also the site of open and closed defensive parapets, spiral staircases, a banquet hall and "Finsterling, the friendly castle ghost". The castle invites you to enjoy an extensive tour of the grounds.

Ramingstein Silver Mine
A visit to this historic mine offers an experience combined with a hint of adventure, providing insights into the history of this region and its mining traditions. Taking you through a mine gallery that has remained essentially unchanged for the last 200 years, the tour gives you a true idea of how arduous the life and work of a miner was back in the olden days. Mighty Moosham castle, whose well was drilled all the way down to the Murtal water table, lies amid the trees of an outcropping on the Mitterberg. They must have been terrible times, when the witch trials were conducted behind this castle's thick walls; the legends of Schörgen Toni, the sorcerer Jaggl and the Staudinger witch all have a real historical background. Cosmopolitan and patron of the arts Hans Graf Wilczek purchased and renovated the castle. Over the decades, he turned it into a much-visited private museum. Lungau Heritage Museum
A cross-section of the life led by merchants and farmers in former times: on display at the museum: tools, folk costumes, sacred art and pieces that reflect popular piety, a collection of chests, an old schoolroom, Roman finds. Natural resources played a major role in the Lungau from the Middle Ages until the late 19th cent. This monument displays many rarities, including a wind furnace, roasting oven, lime kiln and a waterwheel. A marked Miner's Theme Path leads to the former mining areas.

Mauerergut Historic Farm
This farm in Zederhaus is of particular historical and cultural interest; it is made of natural-stone walls, also with a typical brick Lungau grain silo ("Troadkasten") and a mill. Also integrated into this listed farm is the "Pfeifenberger-Stube" – dedicated to the two most famous sons of Zederhaus– spiritual councillor Valentin Pfeifenberger and football professional Heimo Pfeifenberger.

The Taurachbahn Train
This narrow-gauge tourist train originated from a rail line between Tamsweg and Mauterndorf that was shut down in 1981, once part of the Murtalbahn railway opened in 1894. Since this stage was restored, from June to September steam trains run through Lungau's Taurachtal as they did before!
