Lungau - Holiday Paradise

Salzburger Lungau

In Lungau holiday paradise, you never get bored

Whereas other holiday destinations tend to lose their appeal, the Lungau offers a perfect program even on those days when the sun chooses not to shine.

There's a saying that essentially goes, there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing. We couldn't agree more. And it is sometimes astonishing just how quickly the weather can change. In the morning high fog and rain, but in the afternoon the sun shines brilliantly down from the sky once more.

For hiking that's actually quite pleasant - not too hot, with short rain showers spent resting up at a mountain hut along the way where, for the most part, rainy days are actually more high-spirited than usual. You edge closer together, sit down longer, drink a shot or two of gentian, pine or fruit schnapps ... it is often those days that leave you with the most lasting memories …

That said, we do have a few excellent excursion tips for those gloomier summer days in Salzburg's Lungau:

Burg Mauterndorf : yearning for the Middle Ages
Mauterndorf Castle invites young and old to embark on a journey through time back to the Middle Ages, Spend a day walking in the footsteps of Salzburg prince-archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach. The year is 1498 – the time of transition between the Middle Ages and the modern world. Experience great adventures: slip into a knight's suit of armor, discover the knights' playground, enjoy live medieval life, shows featuring the lord of the castle and his court, knightly tournaments for the children and so much more! Finstergrün Castle
This magical castle is an emblem that stands imposingly above the village of Ramingstein. With a history that extends all the way back to the 12th century, enjoy magnificent views from the three castle keeps, while the castle is also the site of open and closed defensive parapets, spiral staircases, a banquet hall and "Finsterling, the friendly castle ghost". The castle invites you to enjoy an extensive tour of the grounds.

Ramingstein Silver Mine

A visit to this historic mine offers an experience combined with a hint of adventure, providing insights into the history of this region and its mining traditions. Taking you through a mine gallery that has remained essentially unchanged for the last 200 years, the tour gives you a true idea of how arduous the life and work of a miner was back in the olden days. For information, call Tel.: +43(0)6474 2296, the Hoffmann family.

Schloss Moosham

Mighty Moosham castle, whose well was drilled all the way down to the Murtal water table, lies amid the trees of an outcropping on the Mitterberg. They must have been terrible times, when the witch trials were conducted behind this castle's thick walls; the legends of Schörgen Toni, the sorcerer Jaggl and the Staudinger witch all have a real historical background. Cosmopolitan and patron of the arts Hans Graf Wilczek purchased and renovated the castle. Over the decades, he turned it into a much-visited private museum. For information call Tel.: +43(0)6476 305 or +43(0)6641307830;

Lungau Heritage Museum
A cross-section of the life led by merchants and farmers in former times: on display at the museum: tools, folk costumes, sacred art and pieces that reflect popular piety, a collection of chests, an old schoolroom, Roman finds. The giant Samson with his dwarves is an imposing sight. For information call Tel.: +43(0)6474 2547 or +43(0)6474 6504.

Bundschuh Smelter
