The sunniest place
In the southern part of Salzburg province lies the local community of Mariapfarr at 1,100 m above sea level. Here - surrounded by picturesque mountain peaks - you will find the best conditions for your vacation in Austria. In winter Mariapfarr is the ideal starting point of the ski region Lungo. The ski areas of Fanningberg, Grosseck-Speiereck, Katschberg, Aineck and Obertauern are located around the village in a star shape. In summer, it is the numerous hiking routes, themed trails and mountain bike tours that invite you to discover the mountains on foot or by bike.
"Lots of nature and even more sun in Mariapfarr."
Highlights in Mariapfarr
Did you know...
that Joseph Mohr served as an assistant priest in Mariapfarr from 1815 to 1817? It was during this time – in 1816 - that Joseph Mohr wrote the words for what would become the world's most beloved Christmas song, "Silent Night". This is why the Parish, Pilgrimage and Silent Night Museum in Mariapfarr also provides fascinating documentation about the life of Joseph Mohr as well as his song.
By the way, did you also know that the mother church in Mariapfarr was first chronicled back in the year 923? Over the centuries, the church was constantly remodeled and expanded in various architectural styles. On 5 April 2018, Pope Francis raised this pilgrimage church by decree to the status of a Basilica minor.
