What is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve?

UNESCO biosphere reserves are large protected areas that represent globally important and unique natural and cultural landscapes. They are living, working, and economic spaces and label particularly valuable habitats in terms of their natural values, but also in terms of the local population and culture.

The aim of a UNESCO biosphere reserve is to ensure the preservation of biodiversity and regional cultural values and to promote the development of the region in an exemplary manner together with the local population.
