Nestled between the Radstädter Tauern and the Carinthian Nockberge mountains, Lungau is the south-easternmost district of Salzburg, with the district capital of Tamsweg. Due to the courses of the upper Mur and Taurach rivers and the 9 tributary valleys, the 15 villages are spread over an area of 1,004 km².
Lungau has 20,000 inhabitants, around 16,000 guest beds and records around 1.5 million overnight stays per year - 2/3 of which take place in winter and 1/3 in summer. In 2012, Lungau was awarded the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Salzburger Lungau
together with the Carinthian Nockberge mountains.
Numerous castles & invite the whole family to travel back in time. In summer, you must have seen the custom of the Lungau Samson and his two dwarves at a Samson parade, and the customs surrounding the Prangstangen and the Preber shooting are an absolute highlight.
Lungau in Salzburg boasts over 60 crystal-clear mountain lakes and various summit hikes of all levels of difficulty. In winter, Salzburg Lungau region is enveloped in a special Advent magic. A winter trip on the historic Taurachbahn, the Advent trail on Katschberg and the traditional Christmas markets make you feel the contemplative time. With 4 ski areas and around 300 kilometers of slopes, fast downhill skiers and leisure skiers will get their money's worth. Due to the exceptional geographical location of Salzburg Lungau region, traveling by train is not the recommended option. Although there is a train station in the district capital of Tamsweg, this station can be reached via the Styrian Murtalbahn.
A journey from the north (e.g. Salzburg, Munich) would be extremely time-consuming and a long detour. We therefore recommend traveling by car or bus. If you still want to travel by train, many of our landlords offer a pick-up service from Bischofshofen or Radstadt train station.
The Lungau valley buses take you comfortably and environmentally friendly to the starting points of your hiking tour and back again during the summer holiday season (mid-July - early September).

You are welcome to park your car in the public parking lot at Rotkreuzgasse 100.
If you are planning the return journey with Bacher Reisen, you can also park directly there.
The Lungau valley buses take you comfortably and environmentally friendly to the starting points of your hiking tour and back again. You can also transport your bike on the valley bus and on the Postbus.

The city of Salzburg is a good hour's drive - 115km away from Salzburg Lungau region. It is 75 km to Eisriesenwelt in Werfen and to Lichtensteinklamm, as well as the Nockalmstraße 60 km. The Malta Hochalmstraße and the Millsättersee are about 50 km away from Salzburg Lungau region.
